America is diverse, and that goes for its states as well as the population as a whole. Still, some states are more pivotal—and representative—than others, which is why focusing on them can tell us something important about the direction of the country. New Hampshire is one such state.
In conjunction with the HarrisX research firm, I recently helped draft a poll of 595 likely participants in the 2020 New Hampshire Democratic primary. The poll was done on behalf of No Labels, an organization that promotes cooperation and problem solving across party lines.
The poll’s sample group included more undeclared (independent) voters than registered Democrats. Independent voters make up 40% of the New Hampshire electorate, compared with 29% for Democrats. In the absence of a serious Republican primary, independents are more likely than usual to participate on the Democratic side.
