4-State Study on Industrial Decarbonization

Challenge

Our partner in the steel industry sought to better understand community perspectives on industrial decarbonization -specifically the role of steel plants in local economies - as part of broader efforts towards clean energy transition that supports regional development.

1,307 residents surveyed

within 25 miles of local steel plants

4 key states covered

Alabama, Indiana, Ohio, and Arkansas

Mixed-method approach

combining online and mail-based surveys

Approach

To assess perceptions of the steel industry and its decarbonization efforts, HarrisX conducted a mixed-method survey of 1,307 residents living within a 25-mile radius of local steel plants in Alabama, Indiana, Ohio, and Arkansas.

Using both online and mail-based methodologies, we ensured coverage across varied geographies and socio-economic contexts, while delivering granular, localized insights.

Results

The research provided rich, regionally diverse data on public sentiment regarding the social and economic impact of steel plants, and views on industrial decarbonization.

These insights informed policy recommendations by ensuring they reflected the lived experiences and priorities of affected communities - helping guide an energy transition that is both sustainable and inclusive.
